My Lovely Horse was Ted and Dougal's Eurosong '96 entry which subsequently went on to be selected as the country's Eurovision entry in the episode "A Song for Europe". They were initially going to perform it using a backing track to an obscure song which turned out to be more popular than they thought.

The song was written by The Divine Comedy's Neil Hannon, Arthur Mathews and Graham Linehan.

Lyrics

(My lovely, lovely, lovely horse)

My lovely horse
(My lovely horse)
running through the field
(running through the field)
Where are you going, with your fetlocks blowing in the wind?
(All Summer)

I want to shower you with sugar lumps, and ride you over fences
Polish your hooves every single day, and bring you to the horse dentist

(My lovely, lovely, lovely horse)

My lovely horse,
(My lovely horse)
you're a pony no more
(you're a pony no more)
Running around with a man on your back, like a train in the night...
like a train in the night
(I Love You Anyway)
My lovely, lovely, lovely horse

Trivia

  • The video playing during the dream sequence was inspired by The Swarbriggs’ 1975 entry "That's What Friends Are For", which Arthur Mathews and Graham Linehan consider to be the funniest Eurovision video of all time. The video can be viewed here.
  • The entry is supposed to parody the country's 1994 winner which was performed by the oldest artists to represent the country at that time. The entry was thought to be inferior to others that had been submitted in an attempt to prevent a third consecutive win but the attempt failed as it became the highest scoring winning song in the Contest's history up to that point.
  • The song has proven so popular among fans of both the show and Eurovision that every year a suggestion is made about using it as the Irish entry. However, official contest rules forbid songs that have previously been released to be entered as well as plagiarism of other songs. It was eventually included as a B-side to a Divine Comedy single.
